Though I feel like I’ve been here for weeks, today officially marked day 1 of our service trip.
At the start of the day I made two intentions – be open and give. Be as open as possible to everything that I was going to witness, and give as much love, light and energy as I possibly could.
Today we visited the Acholi quarter, an area in Kampala the government set up for members of the Acholi tribe displaced by the civil war in Northern Uganda. This area is home to thousands of men, women and children living in extreme poverty without electricity, clean water or much access to food.
Today’s visit was overwhelming in so many ways. I’m still processing and reflecting on everything I took in and am finding it extremely difficult to fully express or articulate what I am feeling - so I apologize for the short post. Blogging, or sharing for that matter, is so much harder than I had expected.
I would like to share one shining moment though. When we arrived we were greeted by the women from New Life in Africa. I was completely overwhelmed by their love, cheer, beauty and warmth. You could see the light in their eyes as they welcomed our arrival. Through song and dance they opened up their area to us and set the tone for such an amazing and emotional day of sharing, understanding and new friendships.
Below is the video of their welcome, along with a few photos of our walk through the quarter.
Love and light.
