Shanti Uganda. Peace Uganda.

In Uganda, Shanti means peace. Shanti Uganda is a birthing center located in the Louweero district, and I had both the honour and pleasure of spending 2 days there.

Shanti is a Canadian organization based in Vancouver that, with funding from last year’s volunteer team, opened up a birthing center for the women in Uganda. What a breath-taking place, both in beauty and mission. The focus is on educating local women and midwives about pre-natal care and different birthing practices so that they can take this education and spread it throughout their villages. I felt such love, peace and spirit at this center.

So many beautiful experiences and memories that I will share below through photos.

My brightest moment was making crystal bracelets with the girls. This was an activity I planned on doing weeks in advance to arriving in Africa.  With the help and support of my most-amazing sister, I was able to purchase and bring down crystal bracelet supplies and tools for over 40 young girls. It felt so incredibly wonderful to be able to provide this activity and experience for them.

I held my sister close to my heart the entire day and cherished every moment I spent with these girls creating something beautiful they could take home, and that would continue to sparkle long after we were gone.

Thank you so much Jen for making this happen.

 shining.

Even the little boy got a crystal bracelet.

Morning yoga with the women of Shanti

Glass bottle design built into the wall as decoration.

Learning how to make paper beads.  A humbling experience.

Empowering tshirts we made with the girls.

Closing song and dance.
